Both teams need only a draw to advance from group G. Will the squads do anything at all on the playing pitch, or wait as the clock ticks to both advance? More
GROUP G: USA vs. Germany
Before the match between the United States and Germany the question isn’t so much which team will win, but rather, if the teams will play at all. Both squads need only a draw to advance, and if they both decide to rest before the more demanding Round of 16, we might end up seeing just some kicking around instead of a real game at Area Pernambuco in Recife tonight.
United States
Team USA has made sure of their comfortable standings position with a win over Ghana in their opening match followed by a 2-2 draw against Portugal. This match, if they win or draw, will see them go through to the finals without a problem. If they lose, they will be counting on a draw between Portugal and Ghana – but even if that does not happen, their odds of advancement are still rather high.
The squad’s coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, in the left on the picture above, has guided his previous national team, West Germany, to a World Cup win in 1990, and then – as the coach of Germany, post-reunification – to a third place at the 2002 Mundial they hosted. Will he use his knowledge of the current opponents against them?
Germany
Much like the States, the Germans only need a win or a draw to advance. If they win – they will fall to second place in group, still allowing for progressing to the Round of 16, and only drop further down if Portugal wins with the African team in the group by eight goals or more or if Ghana wins by at least five.
Joachim Loew (on the right) is the squad’s coach, former assistant to Klinsmann in his German times. He took part in the 2006 triumph, as did the squad’s striker, Miroslav Klose. Will the two use their combined knowledge about Klinsmann’s strategies to best him?
Summary
This match is FIFA’s worst nightmare – the teams can do nothing, and still advance. A similar situation happened in Spain in 1982, and resulted in an 80-minute kickabout betweenWest Germany and Austria, sending Algeria home and bringing shame to both sides. Knowing a one-goal West German win would let both advance, the squads sat on the ball after the goal was scored, despite the growing jeers from angry fans. Will Team USA and Germany engage in similarly unsportsmanlike behavior?
