Both squads got through the second round of eliminations, but they did so in completely different fashions. The most titled Czech team lost only one match in the last season of their national Gambrinus League. In addition, they have won every single game played in front of their own audience, against national league and international opponents, and has scored 49 goals while losing only 7. Železná Sparta was very far ahead of their rivals, and for the first time since the 2009/10 season managed to get the champion title.
Malmö FF
Last season, after two years’ break, Malmö returned to first place in the top Swedish league, Allsvenskan. It was their 17th champion title in club history. They lead the current season with a total of 37 points in 16 matches. The Himmelsblått now hope that they will do better in Champions League qualifications than in their attempts from previous seasons – in 2012 they were eliminated in playoffs by Dinamo Zagreb, and in 2006 they ended their performance at round three versus the Swiss FC Thun.
It seems that this year, they will not do much better. In the second qualifying round, Malmö only managed a 1:0 win against the Latvian FK Ventspils. Their only goal was scored by Isaac Kiese Thelin, and the team might be depending on his skill in the upcoming match as well.
Summary
The Tuesday matchup has a clear favorite and any result other than Sparta’s win will be a huge sensation. It is difficult to find any strong points on Malmö’s side, but one of them could be that the Swedish team is already midway through their league season – so they can focus more on the qualifiers.
