The third round of qualifying for this season´s Champions League continues on Wednesday and the second leg between Sparta Prague and CSKA Moscow is going to be one of the most attractive games of the day. Gaining a hopeful 2:2 draw in the first match, the Spartans are in more favourable position before the home rematch but CSKA are sure to try their hardest to beat the odds and make it past the Czech team. Just a few days after their disappointing draw in their first domestic league game of the new season, the Spartans were not overly confident before the first leg in Moscow. In the match, CSKA took the lead two times but the Prague side always managed to answer back. Therefore, the final score (2:2) was definitely more appreciated by the Czech squad who are now in better position. However, the Prague side´s coach Scasny is well aware of his rivals´ strength and he knows the Wednesday rematch will be anything but an easy affair. Consequently, he decided to change his line-up in the weekend league duel against Ostrava, sparing the key players for the crucial rematch. With several substitutes, Sparta still managed to beat Ostrava, which certainly encouraged them before the duel against Moscow. Moreover, David Lafata, the team´s best attacker and last season´s top scorer, made an appearance in the game after a long absence caused by an injury and he even scored the equalizer. With him, Sparta´s qualifying chances are even better.
CSKA Moscow
The Moscow team were the favourite of the first leg but they failed to meet the expectations, gaining just a treacherous 2:2 draw. CSKA took the lead as early as in the 14th minute but Sparta stroke back through Fatai just a minute later. At the begging of the second half, the home team scored again but not even this time their lead lasted long. Prague midfielder Krejci showed off a brilliant header and the score was equal again. Despite the final prevalence, the Russians failed to score another goal and to their displeasure, the game ended up in a draw. Similarly to their rivals, CSKA also spared some of their key players during their weekend league match and they also succeed, defeating Makhachkala 1:0. With that said, it is obvious the Moscow squad have not abandoned their qualifying ambitions and they will go all-out for the victory in the rematch. The last time CSKA faced Sparta in Prague was a Europa League match five years ago and the game ended up in a 1:1 tie back then. This time, however, Moscow will probably have to win to advance.
