GROUP B: Spain vs. The Netherlands
The second day of this year’s World Cup will serve us a true football delicacy: a match between two teams that faced off for the previous title. Last time, the Spanish took the grand prize while the Dutch had to be satisfied with second place after an emotional match.
Four years ago, in South Africa, it was overtime that decided the winner. In the final shootout it was Andres Iniesta who won the Spanish their 1:0 victory with a well-aimed score. This match, while not at such high stakes, is still sure to be exciting!
Spain
Spain’s national squad is the only team in football history to win the title at three international tournaments in a row. Apart from their 2010 World Cup victory, they have also triumphed at EURO 2008 and EURO 2012. It’s not hard to guess that the only medal Spain cares about this time around is another gold.
Despite the fact that La Roja features many football celebrities, it is worth noting that the squad led by Vincente del Bosque may be the last chance in the careers of many of the players for a major title. Iker Casillas, Xavi Hernandez and David Villa are on the edge of “sports retirement” and are unlikely to still be in the national team come 2018, so they will surely give their best this time around.
The Netherlands
The Dutch currently are in 15th place in the FIFA ranking. Despite participating in World Cup finals three times (1974, 1978, 2010), they have yet to win the ultimate title. Despite their phenomenal performance in South Africa, at the EURO 2012 in Poland they lost three group phase games and dropped out at the earliest stage of the tournament.
Louis van Gaal is coaching a squad that will be led by Robin van Persie of Manchester United. The 30-year-old has scored an astounding 43 goals in 84 national matches. However, he cannot be the only strong point of the team – and it seems like he might be, judging by the squad’s results. Draws against Colombia, Ecuador and Japan, and a loss to France, paired with victories over only Ghana and Wales, are not encouraging stats.
Summary
The Dutch have only played the Spanish 9 times until now. Both teams have been triumphant four times each, and once, in 1987, their match ended with a draw. What is interesting, the Friday battle that will be played at Fonte Nova in Salvador, will be the first one in history where the previous edition’s World Cup finalists will face off against each other in the group phase of the tournament.
