And his jockey, John Velasquez, couldn’t be any happier. ”The second I started kissing at him in the stretch, he picked right up and took off,” John Velazquez said after winning the race with Animal Kingdom. ”It was a great feeling today and great to have him back. He felt as good as ever.”

As you would expect, the colt’s stable, Team Valor, was so delighted to see their prized thoroughbred back in tip – top shape. ”All we were worried about was having him run too big,” Barry Irwin, chief executive to the owners of Team Valor, said. ”We didn’t want to see a big race and have him leave it on the track. He’s much better now than he was last year, we can tell by the way he trains and the way he looks.”

In case you didn’t know, Animal Kingdom was supposed to compete in the 2012 Dubai World Cup last year, coming back from an injury the thoroughbred got from the 143rd Belmont Stakes where he suffered a slab fracture on his left hock. Unfortunately for the colt, he suffered yet another injury on the same leg in a training run at Palm Meadows, eventually ruling him out of the event.

This year, the 137th Kentucky Derby winner is doing it again, only this time, Animal Kingdom may have resurrected the faith of horse racing fans with a splendid performance in Florida, as he looks forward to become the only equine pure breed to win the Dubai World Cup after winning the Kentucky Derby since Silver Charm did it in 1998.

Of course, the rest of the entries for the richest day in horse racing won’t make it easy for Animal Kingdom. And ironically enough, the biggest threat to the colt could very well be a filly, Royal Delta.

Royal Delta comes into the big race following a dominant win in the Sabin Stakes at Gulfstream. And to think that was the filly’s seasonal debut makes it all the more impressive. The winner of the last two runnings of the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, Royal Delta made a case for herself to be considered as a heavy favourite leading up to the world’s richest horserace after cruising to a comfortable victory by five lengths in the Sabin Stakes.

This was also vindication for the filly. After only finishing ninth on the Tapeta in last year’s race and getting beaten on her 2012 debut in the Sabin behind Awesome Maria, Royal Delta was never in trouble this time around, as she simply outclassed her rivals to gain some momentum for the Dubai World Cup on March 30 at Meydan Racecourse.

”A sigh of relief – I’m glad it’s over. I’m happy the way everything went coming in. She came into the race great. She worked well. Obviously we have more to do but it’s a great way to start. I’ve seen horses that were 1-9 and didn’t perform that way. It’s good to see her continue on the same path,” jockey Bill Mott said. ”I think she was working a little bit better this year. I think she was a little stronger. She’s more mature now and filled out better.”

Bill Mott heads into the 2013 Dubai World Cup, looking forward to have another strong showing in the Middle East. ”I want to get her there and do as well going into the race as she did last year. If she can do that we’ll be in okay shape,” Mott said. ”We’re going to run against some of the best horses in the world. This is not going to be an easy task. It’s a tough journey and a very tough race but I think with a good trip she can make a good show of it.”
