SPANISH SUPER CUP, 1ST MATCH: Real Madrid vs. Atlético Madrid

The last match between Real and Atlético went into history as one of the most interesting Champions League finals. Real Madrid
Real will enter the Super Cup match as the favorite, even if they did not wow their audience during their prep for this game. The team has not won a single of their friendly matches, and succumbed to the Italian squads AS Roma and AC Fiorentina, and the English Manchester United. The squad also recently drew versus Inter Milan.
Their matchup for the European Super Cup versus Sevilla FC, the recent Europa League victor, looked quite different. In the Cardiff-based game that saw the debuts of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, it was Cristiano Ronaldo who made it into their opponents’ goal twice, which let Los Vikingos kick off the season with adding yet another cup to their trophy shelf.
A win in the Spanish Cup match will mean that Real will get at least two titles in the 2014/15 edition of their league – the same number as last season, even though they will be less prestigious than those from Copa del Rey and Champions League.
Atlético Madrid
In their 2013/14 campaign, Atlético was a brilliant football surprise not only to Spain, but to all of Europe. The Madrid-based team broke Real’s domination over the city and FC Barcelona’s over the nation, and stole the La Liga title from them. The team coached by Diego Simeone scored their first Primera Division championship since 1996, the ninth in their career.
The Rojiblancos faced easier rivals than their Real opponents in their pre-season warmup, but that may be partly why they will start the season with more confidence. Atlético won friendlies versus national league opponents Sampadoria and Cadiz CF, and against Bundesliga’s VfL Wolfsburg.
What’s more, the Madrid squad is great in their defensive formation. The Colchoneros let in only one goal over the last five matches – in a game where it didn’t even matter all that much, as they won with a score of 5-1.
Summary
Real Madrid is the definite favorite of the Tuesday match. They have not lost a single of their last four games versus Atlético. The less titled Rojiblancos beat the Merengues for the last time in their national league away game played in September of last year, a mere 1-0 triumph.
Since then, Atlético have played Real in the Copa del Rey, Primera Division and Champions League, but did not triumph once. Will the squad get their revenge this time for the May loss and grab a much-needed win before the second game of the tournament?
