Both squads only have a point apiece from their previous matches, but still have mathematical odds for advancement to the finals. Who will keep a cool head in the decisive match? More
GROUP G: Portugal vs. Ghana
Even though the two squads that will be playing at Estadio Nacional in Brasilia each have two World Cup matches behind them, they have only managed to get one point each. Will one of them score a high enough win and advance to the 1/8th final?
Portugal
For the Portuguese, who currently have a high, fourth place in FIFA rankings, ending their World Cup journey so early into the Brazil tournament would be a huge disappointment – and their worst Mundial result since 2002.
However, the squad led by Paulo Bento is facing a huge challenge, as to advance to the Round of 16 they would need to not only win against Ghana, but also majorly improve their lacking goal balance (2-6), in such a state because of their 0-4 loss versus Germany and a 2-2 draw against USA, saved by Silvestre Varela and his last-minute goal securing the draw.
Ghana
The Ghanaian team is participating in the World Cup only for the third time, but has not yet dropped out in the group phase. Eight years ago, the squad finished their World Cup adventure at the Round of 16, and in the quarterfinals four years ago. This year, repeating those results is still mathematically possible, but far from likely.
The Black Stars kicked off this tournament with a 1-2 loss to the States, followed by a sensational 2-2 draw against Germany, even securing a lead for some time during the match. Despite the Germans having higher ball possession, it was Ghana who led 20-11 in shots on goal. However, this time they will have to do without their winger Sulley Muntari, who earned himself one yellow card in each match, and now is forced to sit one out.
Summary
Portugal and Ghana have yet to play a single match against each other in this year’s World Cup. Taking into account the stakes at which the teams are playing, we can expect a very emotional and daring game, as a draw would satisfy neither side. Which squad will do better in the last group G match?
