The Belgian Standard Liège has not used their own stadium and fans to their advantage last week to gain a strong advantage before the rematch versus Panathinakos.
The squad led by manager Guy Luzon dominated, especially at the start of the game – but wasn’t able to use all opportunities to score goals, which resulted in a goalless draw.
That makes this match especially important. With no goals on either side, neither will settle for a lower score. Which squad will fight their way into advancing to the fourth round of Champions League qualifiers?
Panathinaikos Athens
Rivalry with Standard is especially important for the Greens. The Greek media are considering it the most important one in the 100-year history of the club, mainly because of financial reasons (two years ago the squad almost went bankrupt, and has since had a much lower budget).
Advancing to Champions League would supply the squad with quite a sum, which would aid them in trying to return to their form from the old glory days.
The 20-time Greek champions in the last season decided to add some fresh blood from their youth squad, as they couldn’t afford to get famous international names.
Their desperate measures did work out – and let them advance to teh play-off round, where they proved better than PAOK Saloniki and Artromitos FC, as well as Asteras Tripoli. It let them advance to Champions League playoffs.
Standard Liège
Standard Liège was very close to repeat their success from 2008 and 2009, when they became Belgian national champions. They won the regular season, getting ahead of the title defender RSC Anderlecht by 10 points.
In the playoff phase, however, it was the opponent who dominated the pitch, and in effect won Eerste Klasse and advanced straight to the group phase of Champions League.
Liège kicked off the 2014/15 season in good style. They started from two victories – a 3-0 win versus Sporting Charleroi and a 3-2 triumph over KV Kortrijk.
The latter of those two was the debut of Tony Watt, drafted from Glasgow, who had a successful penalty kick in the 88th minute, turned into a goal by Geoffrey Mujangi Bia. It let the squad leave the pitch with the full three points.
Summary
Panathanikos is in a slightly better position, as they will be playing on their own pitch. On the other hand, if Liège gets past Stefanos Kostolis even once, the Greeks will have to step up their attack – something they have not been overly successful at lately.
Overall, it’s difficult to point out the favorite of this match. Which squad will be the one celebrating advancing to the fourth round of Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday night?
