A chance for the Rangers to advance to Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 1994 after just five series games against the Canadiens. How likely is their victory? More
This Tuesday the New York Rangers will face a real chance at ending their Canadian rivalry and advancing to the Stanley Cup Playoff finals. The Rangers are at a 3-1 lead after their Sunday overtime win against the Canadiens, who are weakened by their key goaltender’s injury and absence.
Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens have scored their only win against the Rags in the third match of the series. On Sunday they lost their chance to even out the score before returning to Montreal, but Martin St. Louis’ overtime goal for the Blueshirts.
The Habs created quite the controversy when after the first game of the series, in which their key player Carey Price was injured, they decided to put on ice their inexperienced Dustin Tokarski, who had previously played only 10 NHL games.
Despite it, the young Canadian player gives the Flying Frenchmen a high chance of winning. In his three matches for the Montreal team, he saved 91,7% of shots on goal, letting the puck in only eight times.
New York Rangers
The team’s forward, Martin St. Louis, is the Rangers’ best player. After being moved from Tampa Bay Lightning to his current New York squad, the 38-year-old hockey star did not do brilliantly at first, but finally found his place in the new team.
The turning point was his mother’s passing, which occurred already during the playoff campaign. In this year’s 18 post-season matches, St. Louis has collected 13 points so far (5 of which come from the rivalry between the Rangers and the Canadiens).
In the most recent match on Sunday, the team’s goalie Henrik Lundqvist hit the club record of 41 playoff wins, previously set by Mike Richter. The game also marked the end of the count of not losing a goal while shorthanded 27 times (Lundqvist was finally beaten by Brendan Gallagher).
Summary
The last two matches of this series played in Montreal’s Centre Bell went to the New York Rangers. This time it will be the Canadiens, playing in front of their own audience, that will have a knife to their throat – if they lose, their playoff adventure is over.
Will this year’s Eastern Conference winner be decided in the Tuesday match, or will we get to see more of the two teams on ice before the final judgment?
