SEMIFINALS: The Netherlands vs. Argentina
Both squads who will face off at Arena de Sao Paulo on Wednesday have not had an easy journey to the semifinals – although they each were the favorite of their matches.
The match between the two will surely be a sight to see. The Dutch, still boasting their South African title of vice-champion, have only given in to the Albicelestes once, but it was a high loss – 36 years ago, at the 1978 World Cup.
The Netherlands
The Dutch were close to getting ousted of this year’s World Cup in the quarterfinals. Their advancement at the expense of the sensational Costa Rica was decided only after penalty shots, in which the Oranje won 4-3. The squad’s hero was goalie Tim Krul, who came on the pitch only at the end of overtime, and prevented the squad from dropping out.
The match against Costa Rica was the first at the World Cup that did not end with a Dutch victory after the regular 90 minutes. Louis van Gaal led his squad through qualifiers without a hitch. His squad triumphed over their biggest 2010 nightmare, the Spanish, with a 5-1 final score, and then beat the Socceroos and Chile. Finally, in the Round of 16 they eliminated the Mexicans.
What’s interesting, until the infamous match versus Costa Rica, the Netherlands have lost every World Cup match that they did not secure a win in during regular time (including their 2010 final loss). Now feeling more secure that their “curse of the draw” is broken, they can approach the match versus Argentina with more certainty.
Argentina
The squad that was always named in the strictest group of favorites of each consecutive World Cup, but always faltered in teh end, has made it to the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time in 24 years. In the quarterfinals they beat Belgium, with a goal from Gonzalo Higuain securing their 1-0 win.
Currently ranked fifth by FIFA, the Albicelestes were better than Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, and Nigeria in group phase – although they won ther group matches with just one goal’s difference. The squad also beat the Swiss in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 score. Led by Alejandro Sabella, the team has to work hard for their wins, but in the end, it’s the final score that matters.
Although in their last two matches Lionel Messi, the team’s celebrity, did not make it into the goal, he is still the second highest scorer in the tournament thus far, after only James Rodriguez of Colombia (who has already been ousted from the World Cup). Argentina’s fans are counting on the FC Barcelona player’s scoring skills to beat the Colombian and secure his Golden Boot trophy yet again.
Summary
Of their eight head-to-head matches to date, the Argentinians have won only once, although it was a very valuable victory – in the World Cup finals in 1978. The Dutch triumphed in four other matches, and the squads drew thrice.
The last match between the Oranje and the Albicelestes took place in the group phase of the 2006 Mundial and ended goallessly. The upcoming match can not end in a draw, as one of the squads must end up in the final. Which team will get the chance to battle for gold?
