The second match of the Brazil World Cup will be played by Mexico and Cameroon. Will the underdogs try for another sensational African triumph, or will Mexico catch up with a group phase lead? More
The World Cup’s second match pairs up two other teams from group A: Mexico, struggling football legends, and Cameroon, the surprise from Africa that has once brought their continent’s football to international attention. Neither team is a World Cup title holder, but both are in it for the win.
Mexico
With fourteen World Cup appearances on their tally and not one ultimate victory yet, the Mexicans are eager to move up from their London 2012 Olympic triumph to a World Cup title. However, they will not be faced with an easy task in their group – apart from the weaker Cameroon, they will still have to face the tournament hosts Brazil and the strong Croatian squad.
However, El Tri has not given their fans much hope to go on in regards to advacement. They went through a period of surprising struggle in qualifiers, and for some time was not sure if they would get to Brazil. Their new coach, Miguel Herrera, however, led them to victory (albeit in playoffs), and now hopes to further prove his coaching skills in a match against the African underdog.
Cameroon
Almost forty spots behind their opponent in FIFA rankings and with little chances of advancing from their group, the African team is armed and ready to face their group. With the world-famous Samuel Eto’o on board and with Nicolas N’Koulou or Alex Song to match, they will try to surprise us this Friday.
After an amazing performance in 1982 that showed the world an African team can be a dangerous football opponent, the team did not score a World Cup triumph, but has participated in multiple editions of the tournament. Will they further their continent’s international football achievements this time around?
Summary
Comparing the two teams’ recent stats, it is the African team who has been doing better in their last four matches, winning two and losing just one. Mexico, on the other hand, has an equal count of wins and losses among the four – but the victories are not the more recent.
However, in their group, it is the Mexicans who are more likely to advance. With the hosts nearly certain of their chances, El Tri are at similar playing level to the Croats, Brazil’s Thursday rival. Will Cameroon get a stab at joining the group battle?
