GROUP D: Italy vs. Costa Rica
Rivalry in the first round of matches increased everyone’s interest in the situation in group D, which was considered by most to be the „group of death”. Italy
The Italians’ situation in group D seems to be very comfortable. Three points on their tally and a match against the unpredictable, but much less notable Costa Rica is a good opportunity to secure a quick advancement to the next round.
Italian fans can be especially proud of their team’s disposition, as their playing style has been judged as one of the best yet in the World Cup. Pirlo has also had a chance to show off his skill on the Italian squad.
In their match against the English, however, it was the Sons of Albion who turned out to be better iin match stats. The Italians had fewer shots on goal (12-18 ) and corner kicks (2-9), but it did not change the Squadra Azzurra’s advantage and did not stop their attacks on the English goal line.
Costa Rica
Drawing three very difficult rivals in their group was not good news for the Costa Rican team. Being matched up against three of the world’s top teams, the squad’s fans expected their team to llose each of their matches. To their surprise, though, Costa Rica did far from succumbing; they scored a surprising win against Uruguay after overcoming a 0-1 loss.
The change happened in the second part of the game, when three goals from the Costa Rican squad (with a dozen shots on goal, as compared to the English nine). This, along with other game stats being also in the underdogs’ favour, makes them a dangerous opponent for the Italians, especially with Campbell on board.
Summary
The match between Italy and Costa Rica will be the first match between the squads as part of FIFA. The winner of the match will most likely ensure his advancement to the next round, and the loser will fight for advancement into the Round of 16 with either Uruguay or England.
