WOMEN’S EUROPEAN LEAGUE FINAL: Germany vs. Turkey
This Saturday we will see the two female volleyball squads from Germany and Turkey participating in the French-based European Volleyball Confederation face off in the final four of the tournament. These two squads are the best of the eight participants, and this game will decide the title – and advancement to the worldwide Grand Prix next year.
Germany
The Germans led the Group B table with 26 points to their name, a 6-point lead over second-in-standings Poland, a further four over Spain and another four over Greece. Now they have to face Turkey, who not only got further ahead of their group competitors, but also won the first match of their two-legged tie.
Playing on their own pitch, Großsporthalle in Rüsselsheim the ladies from Germany are going to be backed by their local fans. They will need the support, as in the match against the Turks on Wednesday, the German ladies did not fare as well as they had hoped, winning only one of the four sets played – but with a 9-point lead. The others they gave up without a point chase at the end, putting the final score at 1-3 in Turkey’s favor.
In that match, their twenty-year-old Jennifer Geerties of Rote Raben Vilsbiburg, was the best receiver. Her perfect reception percentage reached 64%, with the second-place Turkish player reaching only the 59-percent mark.
Turkey
Topping the Group A table against Azerbaijan, Bulgaria and Slovenia after rushing from third place, and with 27 points to their next opponent’s 16, the lady volleyballers from Turkey are sure of their skill and strength. In addition, a one-point advantage over the German team gives an extra boost of confidence
The Turkish female team has won the previous game of the two-legged tie, played just this past Wednesday in Cengiz Göllü Volleyball Hall in Bursa. In it, they started strong, with a 25-15 victory in the first set. Unfortunately, they did not have such easy wins later on in the game, winning two more sets with a two-point or four-point difference at 25-23 and 25-21 respectively, and losing one 16-25.
Two of the top players of the match were on the Turkish team. Yeliz Ba?a, striker for Besiktas Istanbul, topped both the best spiker (12 winning spikes) and the best server (3 aces) rankings, and also was named the best overall player of the match. Cansu Cetin was the best blocker, with three winning blocks on her tally.
Summary
Both teams are strong, and both teams are going for the gold. This game decides the ultimate winner, Women’s Volleyball CEV European League 2014 Champion, which will make them the continent’s competitor in the Women’s Volleyball FIVB World Grand Prix next year – which sets the stakes very high.
