Portugal
The common denominator that joins the German and Portuguese is their rivalry with the Swedes. Pushed down to second place by the squad from Germany, the Swedish team was left to face Portugal in play-offs. However, the Selection of the Shields proved deadly, besting the Scandinavian squad in both games, first 1-0, then 3-2, and qualifying easily to Brazil.
We can also find some similarities between Portugal and Germany when looking at how the teams were preparing for the mundial when playing the same rival. Contrary to the Germans, the Portuguese squad won 5-1 against Cameroon, beating Germany’s draw by three goals and losing one less.
In similar fashion, they also beat Ireland. In friendlies before the Brazil event, the Portuguese also scored a 1-0 win against Mexico and drew against Greece with no goals scored.
Summary
The two team’s head to head history contains as many as nine individual matches, of which just one – at European finals in 2000 – went to the Portuguese. The Germans turned out to be the better team at the World Cup they hosted (3-1 in 2006) and two other European final editions, in 2008 (3-1) and 2012 (1-0) respectively.
