WORLD CUP FINAL: This is the third World Cup in history that features Germany and Argentina. The two squads’ semifinal performances were very different from each other. Who will be the ultimate winner in the game for the gold? More
FINAL: Germany vs. Argentina
This is not the first time that Germany has met Argentina in the match for the title of World Champion. We have seen these teams face off twice at such a high level already, once in 1986 that ended in Diego Maradona’s triumph, and once in 1990, when Germany got their revenge after a penalty kick score from Andreas Brehme. On Sunday one of these two squads will once more have the chance to compete in the final match that will decide which of them will emerge from the tournament with the ultimate title.
Germany
The Germans are famous for their nerves of steel and not giving in to emotions. Despite it, it’s hard to believe they will not still be celebrating their epic 7-1 triumph over the hosts – which was both the highest ever win at this stage of the World Cup and the highest loss Brazil has sustained in the past 100 years, since the squad was founded.
The sensational, shocking win over the Brazilians will be worth nothing, though, if the Germans aren’t victorious over Argentina in the final. A win would give the coachees of Joachim Löw their first World Cup gold since their memorable victory over Argentina 24 years ago.
Regardless of their result in this match, the silver or gold medal will be the fourth consecutive one for the squad. The team made it to a silver one in 2002, followed by two bronze ones, in 2006 and 2010 respectively.
The Germans are sure of their skill, but they must remember that even one lost goal to Argentina may equal defeat. They might be the favorites, but it does not mean the match will be any easier – so they have to focus on team play and giving their key striker, Thomas Müller, as many chances for points as they can. If he scores just once, he will be in first place for the Golden Boot trophy, alongside James Rodriguez of Colombia.
Argentina
For the Argentinians, history seems to be repeating itself. After years of falllen hopes and quarterfinal dropouts, for the first time since their final clash versus Germany in 1990, they will get to participate in a game for the gold. What’s more, they have a chance to win it on the football pitch of their age-old rival, Brazil.
Currently in fifth place in FIFA rankings, the Albicelestes barely managed to beat the Netherlands in their semifinal match. After 120 minutes no goal had been scored and the players seemed to have no energy to play. Finally, a result came with penalty shots, in which – thanks to Sergio Romero – the Dutch did not manage to outscore Argentina.
The team’s main weapon against Germany in this match will be their strongest player, Lionel Messi. It is worth noting, though, that the player has not scored a single goal in his last three performances at the Mundial – other than one in last game’s penalty kicks. Will it be enough to put him back on a high-scoring track before the game against Germany?
Summary
With 20 head to head matches on the tally, the squads have gathered 28 goals in total, and it was the Argentinians who were more often the winners. They’ve scored nine victories total over the German team, while their rivals have only achieved six. There were five draws in total.
In the last friendly match that was played two years ago, the Albicelestes won 3-1, but the last World Cup match saw the Germans get ahead – with a stunning 4-0 win at the south African quarterfinals they really made a dangerous impression. Which squad will be able to boast another World Champion title after this Sunday’s game?
