QUARTERFINALS: In the match that will decide one of the four semifinalists, the favorites – by just a bare minimum – are the team led by Joachim Löw. More
QUARTERFINALS: France vs. Germany
The German footballers, much like many of this year’s World Cup favorites, are not doing as well as everyone expected – especially considering their huge capabilities. Three wins and a draw is the same group phase and Round of 16 result their current opponents boast, but the Les Tricolores have scored one extra goal, and deserve a serious approach after showing off their skills on the pitch.
France
At the Brazil World Cup, Les Bleus have been playing surprisingly well, especially considering that one of the team’s biggest stars, Franck Ribery, is absent from the pitch. Advancing into the quarterfinals is viewed as a huge success, especially after not-so-great performances at previous World Cups.
However, a true judgment on the French squad’s performance in this tournament can only be passed after looking at the opponents the team has had to face – and they were not very noteworthy. Les Tricolores’ most challenging counterpart thus far were the Swiss (5-2), who later refused to give in to Argentina in the Round of 16 til the 118th minute. The French also faced Nigeria, and bested them 2-0.
Germany
Die Adler have not stunned us with their Brazilian performance. Coached by Joachim Löw, the squad only has a couple of noteworthy talents, such as Thomas Müller, the team’s highest scorer. The positions they play as are not working as great as Löw had hoped – further decreasing the team’s effectiveness.
If the DFB-Elf wants to so much as think of advancing, they need to step up their game. Their excruciating match versus the solid squad from Algeria or the barely-achieved draw versus Ghana were almost embarrassing to watch, considering the squad has a reputation for being solid and well-disposed.
Summary
The squads’ head-to-head matches undoubtedly were a major part of European and world football. From the ten games’ total, half went to Les Tricolores, but the most recent one was a German triumph – just half a year ago, they scored a 2-1 win at Stade de France after goals from Müller and Sami Khedira. Will the German scorer let his squad get closer to the cup?
