GROUP E: Ecuador vs. France
Ecuador are set to take on France on Wednesday in Group E’s final block of matches. This showdown, hosted at the Maracana in Rio, will ultimately decide La Tri’s fate. They sit second in the group on goal difference, but must hope to match or better Switzerland’s result against Honduras.

South American squads have been playing very well throughout this tournament, but Ecuador have not been too close to the top. To be sure to bypass Switzerland, the Ecuadorians would need a win versus France and hope for Honduras to win versus the Swiss.
However, they have a two-goal advantage over the European team on goal difference, with the Swiss at negative two. Unless the team makes up their losses against Honduras, as long as the points remain balanced it would still be Ecuador who advances.
With Enner Valencia on board and the team’s (unrelated) captain Antonio Valencia, scorer of three goals in two games, Ecuador’s hopes run high. If midfielder Jefferson Montero opens up some extra chances for the scorers from the wing, the squad might surprise us in their final group phase match.
France
After sailing easily through their tournament opening, Les Bleus only have to score a draw in their last match in order to be one hundred percent sure of advancing from their group in first place – and even if they lose, their opponents would need to score six goals and lose none to catch up with them on goal difference.
France was not initially seen as the favorite, especially after Franck Ribery was ruled out of play due to injury. However, the Blues surprised everyone, playing on even level with the very best. Scoring eight goals (three of which were by Karim Benzema) and with still one game to go, the team is now facing higher and higher expectations from their fans.
The French team is strong in their attack held by Benzema and Olivier Giroud, but after the two late-in-the-game goals their defensemen let through against Switzerland some questions are being raised about defense.
Summary
France have been the surprise team of the tournament so far, scoring for fun and looking a real threat. They should be a match for Ecuador, though the South Americans need to win – so they will give it all they got.
