Champions League Quarter-Final: Atlético Madrid – Real Madrid
The quarter-final stage of this year´s Champions League season starts on this Tuesday, April 14, and one of the first two matches that football fans can enjoy betting on will be a highly prestigious Madrid derby between Atlético and Real. It will be a repeat of the last season´s final in which Real eventually beat Atlético 4:1 in the extra time, securing their 10th European Cup. However, it has been Atlético who has had the upper hand in most of the matches these two clubs have played against each other recently so the chances are basically equal. Starting at 8:45 PM (CET), the great Madrid derby will be played at Vicente Calderon stadium.
In the last season, Atlético made it all the way to the final so the team was expected to qualify for the knockout stage this year as well and they did live up to the expectations. In the group stage, “Los Colchoneros” lost just one game while drawing once and winning the remaining four matches. In the round of 16, the Madrid team faced Leverkusen, the runner-up of group C. Leverkusen was not supposed to be the team who would eliminate the Madrid favourite but the first leg played in Germany indicated that it would not have to be that easy for Atlético. The home team was better and they deservedly gained 1:0 victory over their Spanish rival. Therefore, Atlético head coach Simeone knew his team would have to win by two goals in the return match to qualify but Madrid only managed to reach the same score 1:0 in the second leg. As no goals were scored in the extra time, it was the penalty shoot-out that was to determine the winner. Luckily for the home team, it was Atlético who stood up to the shoot-out better. In the quarter-final, Atlético will face their city rival Real which is a team they have been unbeaten against this season. In the last head-to-head match which was a February league duel, “Los Colchoneros” even outclassed Real 4:0.
As the defending champion, Real performed excellently in the group stage. “Los Blancos” was the only team to win their group without losing a single point, which was also why they went to their round of 16 series with Schalke as the favourite. Madrid won the first leg in Germany easily 2:0 and it looked like the second leg would be rather a formality. However, knowing they had absolutely nothing to lose, Schalke surprised Real with a very active performance. The away team even took the lead twice in the first half but Madrid managed to equalize thanks to Ronaldo´s two goals. But the Germans kept on playing great even in the second half and by scoring another two goals, they turned the match into a real drama. Fortunately for the home team, Benzema also managed to score a goal and the final result 3:4 was enough for Real to qualify for the quarter-final. Just a few days after this unexpected defeat, Ancelotti´s team lost another game – a crucial match against Barcelona but a week later, the Madrid team hammered Granada 9:1 with Ronaldo alone scoring incredible 5 goals in the match, tearing all the speculations about the team´s crisis to pieces.
The opening quarter-final match between Atlético and Real will be a repeat of the last season´s final. Atlético has mostly prevailed over his city rival in the recent head-to-head matches but apart from the second game against Schalke, Real has put up a flawless performance in the Champions League so far. To know which of these two Madrid teams succeeded, we will have to wait till Tuesday night.

Champions League Quarter-Final: Juventus Torino – AS Monaco
The match between Juventus Torino and AS Monaco should be a way less tight than the Madrid derby. While Monaco has never won any major international trophy, the Italian team can boast a wide range of both domestic as well as international honours including two European Cups. But this season´s results of the French Ligue 1 club have been really impressive and Juventus, the favourite of this series, knows that knocking them out will not be easy. Starting at 20:45 PM (CET), the duel between Juventus Torino and AS Monaco will be played at the Juventus Stadium.
After a severe punishment for Juventus´ involvement in a huge corruption affair, the Torino team has made it among the Italian top class again, dominating Seria A for the last three seasons. Last year, “The Old Lady” totally ruled the Italian league and they have kept on performing in that way this season as well, losing just 2 out of 30 matches so far. However, in the Champions League, Allegri´s team has not been that strong. Along with Atlético Madrid, Juventus was the favourite of the group A that also featured Olympiakos Piraeus and Malmo. Eventually, the favourites did qualify but it was much harder for them than they had expected. In the round of 16, the defending Italian champion faced Dortmund that did not prove to be a real match for Juventus. After two victories (2:1 and 3:0), the Italian team advanced to the quarter-final where they will pit their strength against Monaco, the biggest surprise of this season so far and the team that managed to eliminate Arsenal in the round of 16. But Juventus´ head coach Allegri is undoubtedly aware of the Monaco team´s strength and his side will go to the Tuesday match with a maximum concentration and determination.
Historically, Monaco is one of the most successful teams playing the highest French league. So far, they have won 7 domestic league titles, 5 French cups and 4 French supercups but when it comes to international honours, their trophy collection is a way less impressive. The most significant success of the Monaco team is the 2004 Champion League runner-up and the 1992 UEFA Cup Winners´ Cup runner-up. In this season, Monaco started their Champions League journey in the group C where they actually emerged as the winner. In the round of 16, Monaco took on Arsenal that might have underestimated their not so renowned rival and paid the price for that in the end. Monaco put up a superb and courageous performance in London and gained a surprising victory 3:1 which gave them a great chance for the second leg. In the rematch, Arsenal played a lot better and won 2:0 but even this result was not enough for them to qualify and it was Monaco who advanced to the top eight. We will see if they can knock out another world-famous club.
In the other Tuesday quarter-final, the defending Italian champion Juventus Torino will face the dark horse of this Champions League season – AS Monaco. The home team will certainly make sure not to do the same mistake as Arsenal who lost 1:3 against Monaco in the first match of their round of 16 series. Will Juventus meet the expectations and win? Or will the away team manage to defeat another football giant? We will know by Tuesday night.
