This time around, they have it easy on their way to the group phase – and while a bad luck in the draw could still give them the same disadvantage, it seems that they have their job cut out for them: repeat the previous match’s success, and hope for a stroke of luck during group selection. The Icelandic team has made their way to Champions League’s group phase once – besting the Maltese Birkirkara FC in 2001. However, the rest of their history with the elite league does not look as bright – of 18 matches they won only three and drew four times, and had a fatal goal balance of 20-55.
Last year, KR took part in Europa League eliminations, but were eliminated in round two. This year, facing the more challenging Champions League opponents, it does not seem as if their success will be any greater – they would have to win by at least one goal to put them on even ground with Celtic.
