It’s only the first round of the German Bundesliga, and we already have a big game to look forward to. Last year’s fourth team, Bayer Leverkusen, will be visiting the vice-champions of the previous season, Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund
Borussia has started this season’s campaign with an early 2-0 win over their most important rival, Bayern Munich, in a game for the DFL-Supercup. Goals for the Dortmund side were scored by Henrikh Mkhitaryan oraz Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Three days later, Borussia had no problem defeating SV Stuttgarter Kickers with a high, 4-1 score, getting a head start point-wise into the German Cup.
The squad lost the Polish Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich in summer exchanges. It seems, however, that Borussia will manage without him, especially with the addition of Ciro Immobile – assuming he picks up speed.
Borussia struggles more with their defensive formation, which showed in a friendly match with FC Liverpool, which ended in an embarrassing 0-4 loss to the English. On the other hand, their stats of 11 wins of 17 on their home pitch last season sure do look encouraging!
Bayer Leverkusen
While Borussia’s pre-season stats are great, Bayer’s are brilliant. In their last five games, all of which were victories, Die Werkself scored fifteen goals, losing only three, two of which they suffered in the Champions League qualifier against FC Copenhagen, who knocked out Dnipro in the previous round.
In the first round of the German Cup, Bayer scored a 6-0 win against Alemannia Waldalgesheim. Bundesliga’s leading 2012/13 goalscorer Stefan Kiessling was the scorer of an astounding five of those.
Maybe the German striker will get a second wind under Leverkusen’s new coach Roger Schmidt, who recently led Red Bull Salzburg to an Austrian league championship.
Summary
The Dortmund squad is the favorite of this match, despite the fact that last season they did not manage a single win versus Bayer (they did scrape a two-goal draw and an 0-1 loss). Borussia’s last success against Leverkusen was as far back as February 2013.
Both squads have an even count of 25 Bundesliga wins in their current rivalry, and 20 draws. Which team will be the better one in the first round of the new season?
