A match between the tournament’s underdog and the surprising Team USA is difficult to judge. Belgium has a strong squad, but the United States has been quite the surprise at this World Cup. Which team will steal the win and advance to quarterifnals?
Belgium
The main topic ahead of the big game versus the Americans in Belgian football media have been the player absences that have been plaguing the squad of late and that the team’s coach Marc Wilmots will have to compensate for with good tactics.
We will not see the squad’s camptain Vincent Kompany, as the defender is still battling a groin injury. The performances of two other defenders, Thomas Vermaelen and Anthony Vanden Borre are also uncertain.
With their full lineup on pitch the Belgian team did well, although they did not cause as much of a sensation as many teams with theoretically weaker squads did. Despite Eden Hazard, 23-year-old midfielder who plays for Premier League’s Chelsea and his 21-year-old teammate Romelu Lukaku being on board, along with other big football names, if the squad does not pick up the pace they may be in danger of getting ousted.
United States
Advancement was a surprise to the US team, who – according to most predictions from before the group phase – were to take third place in the tournament’s eliminations. However, thanks to Jurgen Klinsmann working his coaching magic and the squad keeping up with their deadly opponents Portugal and Ghana, the squad did advance.
It was a huge surprise to everyone – including Team USA itself. Not even the coach anticipated the team’s world-class success, and he had to tell his players to call off the vacation time they planned for early July after their early advancement through their second match draw against Portugal.
Unfortunately, the American team is unlikely to enter the game without absences. Jozy Altidore sustained hamstring injury early in the Ghana match, robbing the team of its target striker. Dempsey was left to play alone up front, changing the squad’s attack strategy. However, Altidore claims he is „ready and available” for the Belgium match. Will he show?
