The two squads from the Old Continent were considered to be the favorites before the World Cup even started, but even just the first matches saw them struggle to maintain that reputation. Belgium

The second half proved to be a bit better, even if not much so. The Belgians’ attacks put the opposing goalie in danger, even if rarely. The European team did have 5 more shots on goal than their rivals, had higher ball possession and three times the count of corner kicks.
Russia
The Russian squad has had to face a rival much more challenging than the one the Belgians faced. The team that beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s eleven at the qualifier stage let the Koreans take the lead in minute 68 of their opening match.
A few minutes later Kerzhakov scored an equaliser, motivating his teammates to work for a victory. They started attacking more often, but it resulted only in a statistical improvement (including getting ahead of the Koreans in shots on goal and ball possession.
Summary
The rivalry between Belgium and Russia at the World Cup is sure to be exciting. At the Korea/Japan edition the Benelux state eliminated the Sborna with a 3-2 group phase win. Both squads did give in to Japan, but Russia’s advancement was still possible until the very end. Will this time be just as exciting?
