The attention of Bayern’s fans has been focused throughout pre-season matches on the new addition to their squad, Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker, freshly imported from Borussia Dortmund, has proven his worth in almost every friendly match, gathering a total of five goals in five matches.
Unfortunately for the Munich squad, their key striker faltered in a critical moment – during the DFL-Supercup match against his former team. Playing without Robben, Ribery and a couple more cornerstones of their squad, Bayern lost two goals after shots from Aubameyang and Mkhitayan.
Luckily for them, they rebounded to a victory only a few days later in the preliminary round of the German Cup, scoring a 4-1 win versus SC Preussen Munster.
Wolfsburg
The previous Bundesliga season went very well for the Wolfsburg squad. Their fifth spot in standings with only a four-point loss to a spot guaranteeing Champions League entry was a bit of a disappointment, but it was still their best result of the last few years.
The results in the pre-season games, however, were not as great. Wolfsburg did not win any of their three friendlies. The average VfL Bochum turned out to be better (1-3), as did Atletico Madrid (1-5). Finally, the squad managed a draw against Cardiff City with a 3-3 score.
Summary
To date, the rivalry between the squads points to a high likelihood of a Bayern victory. Of 37 head-to-head matches, the Wolves have been triumphant only… Three times! The current series of three wins of the Munich squad included a 6-1 triumph in March. Does Wolfsburg even stand a chance?
