GROUP F: Argentina vs. Iran
After kicking off the World Cup with an uncertain 2-1 win against Bosnia, the squad from Argentina is looking for points that will assure their Group F leadership while Iran looks to make up for their goalless draw.
La Albiceleste and Team Melli will face off in Belo Horizonte, opening the football evening with their Group F match.
Argentina
After a far from best start in the Mundial against Bosnia and Herzegovina and playing far from best in it – being at the bottom of most match stats – La Albiceleste really need to bring it on if they want to secure the necessary points (and a potentially decisive goal balance) in their match versus Iran.
Despite the drawbacks they exhibited in their previous match, they do remain the favorites, as they are now unbeaten in six matches, with four wins and 2 draws. In the last 10 matches, Sabella’s men have bagged 7 wins, 2 draws, and only lost once, outscoring their opponents 21-8.
Iran
Iran are unbeaten in 5 matches, although their games were against fairly weak opponents. In their last 10 matches, Queiroz’s men have won 5, drawn 4, and have only lost once. This is thanks to their strong defensive strategy that allowed them to not lose a single goal against Nigeria despite only 37% ball possession – but it also prevented them from focusing a bit more on offense and scoring a game-winning goal.
Team Melli’s coach Carlos Queiroz says that he is satisfied with his tema performance in the last game, but would like to not be viewed as a defensive team. He also brings up how the squad, due to political and financial troubles in their home country, has not had the luxury of playing many frielndlies before travelling to Brazil.
Summary
The two nations have met each other only once, in 1977, when the Iranians managed a very respectable 1:1 draw. However, this time around the match may have a slight political subtext – being the first such one in this World Cup.
That is because after a 1994 bombing of Buenos Aires that killed 85 and wounded many more, it was Iranian terrorists who were accused, but never took responsibility. Hopefully, political differences aside, we will see a great show of football from both sides and an exciting kickoff to yet another football night.
