QUALIFIERS, ROUND 3: Bookmakers say the teams’ chances are fairly even. Will Celtic, worth three times more than the Polish eleven, take yet another step towards Champions League participation? More
ROUND 3, FIRST LEG: Legia Warsaw vs. Celtic F.C.
According to bookies and experts, the chances of the respective champions of Poland and Scotland in the first match of their third-round two-legged tie are very even. Despite a failed start versus St. Patrick’s Athletic, Legia got back on her feet and triumphed over her Irish opponents. Celtic, however, did even better in their round two matches versus Iceland’s KR Reykjavik – despite the fact that it was their opponents that were named as certain favorites.
Legia Warsaw
The Polish club has had some trouble getting back their fans’ trust after an unlucky one-goal draw in round two’s first match versus St. Patrick’s Athletic and the national league loss to a much weaker opponent just three days later. However, they bounced back from it with an amazing 5-0 win over their Irish Champions League rival, and a further 3-1 victory in an Ekstraklasa away game versus Cracovia restored their confidence.
However, their match against Celtic is almost unprecedented – the Polish squad has not faced many overly challenging and strong teams. To find their tougher, international opponents we have to look a few seasons back, to Shakhtar Donetsk in 2006/07, a friendly match versus Borussia Dortmund in 2012, or the Romanian Steaua Bucharest in the last Champions League season.
Unfortunately for the Polish squad, their two-legged Champions League tie versus the Romanians ended in a draw that fell to Steaua on away goals, their match against Borussia was a 0-1 loss, and the match versus Shakhtar ended at 2-3, in favor of the visiting Ukrainians. Coach Henning Berg plans to shuffle his squad, including Southampton’s formerMarek Saganowski in the attack line. Will the Poles be able to keep up with the Scots?
Celtic F.C.
Unfortunately for them, the Bhoys have not been faring as well as they would like entering the final stage of Champions League qualifiers. They are slightly weaker than in the past seasons, judging by their international play – but in the Scottish Premier League they still take the cake, obviously too strong for any of their national opponents. However, their recent one-goal loss to St. Pauli in a club friendly does not put the team in the brightest of moods before the Champions League qualifier.
In their national league’s previous season, Celtic was definitely dominating the pitch. Suffice it to say, they were a full twenty-nine points ahead of second-in-standings Motherwell! In addition, they took part in Champions League, even if qualifications were a steep climb for them. They just barely bypassed Shakhtar Karagandy and Elfsborg, and in the group phase they managed a win versus Ajax Amsterdam on their own pitch before elimination.
Unlike Legia, the Hoops are struggling with some absences. Scott Brown will sit this one out due to a hamstring injury, and James Forrest will also stay off pitch. While it would be tempting for Ronny Delia to put the same eleven that bested Reykjavik on pitch, but with Jo Inge Berget joining the squad after a loan move from Cardiff, the lineup from that match is likely to be tweaked.
Summary
The squads’ recent match history is rather balanced. Celtic’s DWDWL shows an interrupted stability, while Legia’s LDLWW points towards an improvement – but it’s the Scottish squad that boasts a Champions League title (even if is rather dated).
Taking into account Legia’s high win versus the Irish St. Patrick’s and Celtic’s squad troubles, this match – despite initially seeming like the favorite is obvious – may take some interesting turns. Will the Scottish team pull through and advance to Champions League’s group phase ?
