In the last group phase match of this Hockey World Cup, the favorites from Russia will face the tournament’s hosts, Belarus. Who will prove stronger in the last battle before quarterfinals commence ? More
In a faceoff that closes the group phase of the Minsk Hockey World Championships, the still unbeaten Russians will play against the surprisingly well-disposed Belarussians.
Whilst to the Russian squad the result of the match against their friendly western neighbors does not make much of a difference, as they are first in the group anyway, the tournament’s hosts still have much to prove, and will fight for a win.
Russia
The Russians have gone through the tournament’s group phase without breaking a sweat, winning all of their six matches to date – most of them in surprisingly good style. They are proudest of their 6-1 victory against Team USA – revenge for Russia’s loss in Sochi.
What’s more, the squad’s top players are not all from the NHL. It is true that Aleksander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is the second-best player in this tournament (unfortunately injured in his match against Germany).
However, Viktor Tichonov of SKA Sankt Petersburg has been doing even better in Sborna, gathering a total of 13 points in six matches. Other strong players include NHL’s Siergiey Bobrovsky and Andrei Vasilevski from KHL.
Belarus
Playing at home is always easier on the team than tacking enemy territory. In the past three editions of the World Championship, Belarus has not fared too well, ending the tournaments in 14th place. This year not only are they already certain of advancing into the quarterinfals, but also may repeat their record sixth-place victory from 2006.
Belarus’ leaders are, both as for playing style and point-wise, Michail Grabovsky from the Washington Capitals and Sergey Kostitsyn from Avangard Omsk. Especially the first of the two can prove to be Belarus’ secret weapon against the Russians as he knows a few of their team quite well from his NHL career.
Summary
The home team won’t give up easily. This year, they not only want to advance to the quarterfinals, but would also like to avoid being up against Canada or Sweden, who have the two top spots in group A.
Will Belarus be able to count on “brotherly help” from their Russian neighbors, or will Sborna end the group phase in this tournament without a single lost point?
