Montreal Canadiens – New York Rangers

On Saturday, the Eastern Conference’s two best teams will start their third-round battle in the NHL playoffs. Both the Canadiens and the Rangers have overcome some rough times in these playoffs. Which will have the upper hand ? More
East Conference rivalry begins with two teams that in the second playoff round managed to turn their fates around. The New York Rangers were losing 1-3 in their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but managed to win the following three matches and finish the round with an advantage of one win. The Canadiens similarly changed their score around to a 4-3 result from a 2-3 disadvantage against the ex-favorites, the Boston Bruins.
Montreal Canadiens
For the Canadiens, this is their first Conference Final advancement since 2010, when they were eliminated after five losses to the Philadelphia Flyers. It’s only their third advancement to this stage of the playoffs since 1993, when the Canadian squad won the most recent of their 24 Stanley Cups – a number that still remains the league record.
In their first match of the round against the Rangers, the Canadiens’ goalie, Carey Price, is worth watching. In this year’s post-season matches he has managed to save 92,6% of the rivals’s shots on goal and one time managed to not let in a single goal.
The third playoff round will also be a chance for some of the less well-disposed forwards from the Canadiens’ team to rehabilitate themselves – the fact that in the 2014 playoffs to date, defenseman P.K. Subban has a higher goal count than any of the attackers. However, Subban deserves much praise for scoring 12 goals over the course of 11 games.
New York Rangers
This past Tuesday, the team’s Swedish goalie Henrik Lundqivst scored himself an NHL record – he was the first goalkeper to win 5 playoff games in a row in match number 7. He is considered to be the metaphorical nail in the Canadiens’ coffin in the Conference final, especially since the Rangers have yet to show huge offensive strength in this year’s playoffs.
Rick Nash will have a chance to get his mind back in the game. Fourteen playoff games in, he has yet to score a single post-season goal – a surprising number, considering as in the regular season he had scored 26. Derek Stepan also disappointed his team with just 4 points in the first 12 matches, but he made up for it slightly with two assists in the last two matches of the previous round.
Summary
In the regular season, the Canadiens had faced off against the Rangers three times, and each of those matches ended in goalless ties. Montreal triumphed twice, one of those times in a post-overtime shootout, while the Rangers only managed one modest 1:0 win. Will this even balance of strengths make this match especially interesting?
